Healing Beyond Medicine: Lessons from Divorce, a Pandemic, and the Power of Connection

In 2019, my life took an unexpected turn. Some have defined this “turn” as my “wake up call”.

As a functional medicine doctor, I had spent years helping others heal, yet I found myself in the throes of a painful divorce. I believed I understood the science of well-being- hormones, nutrition, gut health- but there was something deeper, something more powerful, even more powerful than the most fundamental medicine.  Something more profound than anything a book could teach us, or a doctor would prescribe us.

It was simple: It was human connection.

Then came 2020. The pandemic reshaped everything, amplifying isolation, fear, and uncertainty. I was alone in a world that seemed to be unraveling. Like many, I clung to routines, but even the best diet and supplements couldn’t fix what was missing. I needed more than biochemistry; I needed laughter, deep conversations, and the warmth of a shared moment.

Through this journey, I learned that healing isn’t just about optimizing lab results, it’s about processing good information. Not just the data we consume, but the music that moves us, the books that expand us, and the friendships that sustain us. I learned that happiness isn’t something you achieve; it’s something you cultivate by choosing the right inputs for your mind and soul.

As the world reopened, so did I. I made time for old friends and meaningful conversations. I rediscovered music, letting certain songs become medicine for my spirit. I read not just for knowledge, but for joy. And I embraced a simple truth: the best medicine isn’t always found in a bottle.  It’s found in a well-lived life.

Now, when I sit with my patients, I don’t just ask about their symptoms; I ask about their relationships, their passions, and the things that bring them joy. Because healing isn’t just about fixing what’s broken- it’s about nourishing what makes us whole. And that, I’ve learned, is the true essence of medicine.
